Japanese designer Issey Miyake began his foray into fashion with couturiers like Hubert de Givenchy and Guy Laroche, before starting the Miyake Design Studio in 1970. Considered the father of Japanese fashion, he also launched Issey Miyake Fête, Pleats Please Issey Miyake, and his bag line Bao Bao Issey Miyake, each of which has pushed new boundaries of design and innovation. He also famously created Apple founder Steve Jobs’ signature uniform-like wardrobe of classic black turtlenecks.

Known for combining Eastern and Western elements in his work, Miyake’s designs are typified by futuristic geometrical lines, sculpted-ness, and bold use of colour. Although Issey Miyake handed over the reins of the label in 1994, the brand has continued making practical, versatile clothing with unconventional constructions and integrating traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The secondhand market has helped put his designs within reach and expanded his legacy.
